SUMMARY OF THE SUFACHAC STEERING COMMITTEE

Its very first edition of the Steering Committee was held in March 2017 where the first Annual Work Plan Budget (AWPB) was validated. This AWPB was to set the databases of the Project through a number of studies and fieldwork conducted by both consultants and project implementing partners.

The second steering committee took place in Douala from 24^th to 25^th September 2018 where a review of the planned activities realized within the timeframe was done and some recommendations for the way forward were done. A second AWPB was also validated at the end of this second session and served as a canvas for the implementation of the activities from October 2018 to November 2020. 

This 3^rd session which took place from the 3^rd to the 4^th of December 2020 was aimed at examining the level of execution of the project’s activities from October 2018 to November 2020, and equally to introduce the Mid-term review team of consultants and launch the Mid Term Review process

The Ministers representative, Dr. NDONGO BARTHELEMY, in his opening speech did not fail to underline with satisfaction the achievements of the SUFACHAC project since its creation in the midst of socio-political crisis and Covid 19 pandemic.

Mme. ZABOYA Dama Adèle epse Makomra the national director of the SUFACHAC project made a presentation of the project's achievements with a few samples of reports and products of the various activities carried out such as "capacity building workshop to empower women of the Bakossi Bayang Mbo landscape.

The Mid-term review team was presented to the steering committee by Dr. ADAMOU BOUHARI the UNEP Task Manager. After deliberations, some observations, questions, resolutions, and recommendations were made as a guide for the way forward. The session ended with the interview of some officials and the preparation and signing of the final communique.

CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP OF THE FEMALE MEMBERS OF THE VILLAGE FOREST MANAGEMENT COMMITTEES (VFMCs) ON THE IMPORTANCE OF PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT/ENVIRONMENTAL AUDIT PROCESS AND TRAINING ON SUSTAINABLE INCOME GENERATION ACTIVITIES

SUFACHAC project organized a capacity-building workshop to empower women from Bakossi Bayang Mbo Landscape on the importance of public participation during Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA/EA) processes and mainstream in sustainable incomes generating activities in order to help reduce pressure on natural resources within and areas around protected areas.

Mme Pekeleke Monica, chief of service for sensitisation at the Ministry of Environment Protection of Nature and Sustainable Development emphasised in her presentation the importance of women’s participation at all the stages in the ESIA.EA processes. She said this will improve their knowledge of projects operating within their environment.

The three days training saw the participation of 20 selected women from 04 protected areas namely (Bakossi National Park, Bayang Mbo wildlife Sanctuary, Tofalla Hills wildlife sanctuary, and Mak Betchou wildlife sanctuary (in the process of creation).

At the end of this training, all the women gained both theoretical and practical insights and knowledge on the production of various types of soaps, cleaning products and soybean transformation.

Several products were produced and each participant was provided with a start-ups as they went home with samples of every products produced. Actually, the Start-up materials were to enable them transfer every knowledge acquired from this training to other community members.

A recognition “Attestation” for participation was issued to each participation.

At the end of the workshop, the women expressed their satisfaction and revealed that henceforth they can effectively prepare and submit feasible and concrete business plans in their respective communities for soaps and other related product making.

A media platform (WhatsApp) for SUFACHAC BBML women and trainers on natural resources conservation and valorisation was established to ease sharing of challenges and other way forward and exchanges are ongoing.

Welcome to the maiden edition of the SUFACHAC News. This edition highlights project’s inception (29 – 31 of March 2017) to on field implementation.

EDITORIAL:
Dear Partners/Readers,

I feel delighted to share information related to the SUFACHAC PROJECT whose first year of existence had been dedicated to baseline information gathering. As a matter of reminder, SUFACHAC is building on previous conservation efforts that had taken place within the Bakossi Bayang Mbo landscape. Results of some of the studies carried out by both national consultants and implementing partners have been tremendous and are geared towards meeting the project’s goal.

A review of the level of implementation of activities of 2017/2018 shows a significant progress on the level of achievements, number of current and potential stakeholders and partners (ERuDeF, CHEDE) involved. From the review process of collaborative management and conservation initiatives within the region and TOU experiences within the national territory it has been revealed that collaboration at all levels and communication has a significant role to play in attaining the set goals. I wish to appreciate the efforts of all our collaborators, partners and stakeholders for their continuous support in ensuring the progress made for this first year. Communicating our progress and lessons learned is of utmost important. While hoping that you find this maiden edition of the SUFACHAC NEWS interesting and informative I wish you a happy collaboration for the progress of conservation work within the landscape. Contributions for publications are welcome from each partner and stakeholder.
